Welcome to the Highgate Horticultural Society website

On 15 December, 1859 a circular was issued convening a meeting for the purpose of establishing a Society, to be called the Highgate Horticultural and Floricultural Society and the first exhibition was held on 27 June, 1860; there were 71 entries and prizes amounting to £23/7/0d were awarded.

Times have changed but we are still a lively group of gardening enthusiasts in the Highgate area, keen to interest others in the joy that gardening brings.

We have three shows a year which we are very lucky to be able to stage in the United Reformed Church in Pond Square (see contact page for address and map) and although horticultural pursuits are our main aim, our shows also include flower arranging and domestic classes and as we are particularly keen to interest younger exhibitors we have a number of classes for children.

Membership is open to all and although most of our members live in the Highgate area we have active members from as far away as Hampshire!

2017 was a fantastic show year, entries up and the quality excellent but we want to see lots more exhibitors so if you are interested in gardening and are not yet a member please join and lets see some new faces picking up cups at our award presentations. There is something for everyone flowers, fruit, vegetables or if you are a flower arranger, baker or enthusiastic knitter there is a category for you and lets not forget we want to encourage our young people to get involved so why not get your children or grandchildren to exhibit.

We do need more able bodied people to help out - setting up the shows on the Friday before and helping to clear away after – most of the committee are almost on their knees by then! We always need produce to sell and cakes for our teas and if you have plants, fruit or vegetables surplus to requirements please bring them along to the shows so we can sell them to raise fund to pay for staging the shows. Contact the Secretary if you would like to volunteer.

Speaking of fund raising, we will be at Fair in the Square as usual - please come along, have a chat and buy plants and support your society this way.  Be there or be square!
