Newsletter 26 - February 2013

NEW MEMBERS WANTED!

2013 we have designated as “recruit a new member” year!  Whilst we have a healthy and active membership this is not the time to rest on our laurels so we want to ask every one of you to recruit a new member.  We find that this is the best way; the personal approach with encouragement and not a little flattery is far better than a general call to join.  We all know someone who may be a little shy or who doesn’t see themselves as a good gardener, but let’s face it we all have – rather like cooking – a ‘signature’ plant.  Something that we grow very well and are quietly proud of when others say they can’t grow them.

If not gardening, perhaps they have talented children or grandchildren who can enter our under 16’s categories; and of course the flower arrangers; those with a talent for handicrafts; cake bakers and preservers; and failing all that I am sure we can all make a ‘vegetable person’ with a funny caption!  So come on, approach friends and neighbours tell them about the benefits of membership (not least discount at garden centres and our garden party) and the fun we all have at the shows.

CHAIRMAN'S CHAT

As I sit and write my Chairman's Chat the snow is falling in great quantities, so no gardening this weekend.

2012 was the most difficult year for all the gardening jobs; first of all it was too dry, then too wet and not too warm. I lost all my first planting of sweet peas as they were standing in water for weeks - but the second planting bloomed into October so that was a bonus. The vegetable garden was a great disappointment, the runner beans being the only successful veg. Let’s hope that 2013 will be a great deal better weather wise. Although 2012 was a bad weather year our shows went very well and the entries were up on previous years. Now I hope you have already thought about your entries for the Spring show on Saturday, 23rd March, do come along, we look forward to seeing you.

Our National Garden Scheme Open Day last year, although a showery weekend, was quite good and we raised £800 for the various charities supported by the NGS. We have decided that 2013 will be our last Open Garden; this is after 27 years with the NGS and 12 years before to benefit other charities. We have an additional date for this year - Friday evening 12th July 6 - 9pm the £5 entrance fee includes a glass of wine and nibbles. Then we have our usual openings on Saturday, 13th and Sunday, 14th July 1.30-6pm. On the Saturday HHS are doing their famous teas!

The Annual General Meeting is on Wednesday, 13th March at the Highgate Society, do try to come along and, of course, air any views you may have; it is also an opportunity to meet other members. Once again I must thank all our committee members and helpers for their hard work. We are very lucky to have a friendly and successful society and if you feel inclined to become a member of the committee just let us know.

If any member would like to contribute to this Newsletter it would be very welcome - you may have some gardening tips or even an unusual recipe which would make interesting reading.

Happy gardening, and it is still snowing!
