Newsletter 28 - February 2014

We have always said that the best time to recruit new members is at the shows – although we do rely on you to promote the Society vigorously all year round!  We obviously have ample opportunity to do so at our own shows and again we rely on you to encourage people to attend but we are missing a golden opportunity to reach a fantastic number of people.  Yes, I am talking about Fair in the Square – despite the weather (and it poured on and off all afternoon) thousands attended in 2013.

As you know we are working in conjunction with Fair in the Square to organise the Country Fair displaying handicraft, home baking and of course horticulture - an ideal opportunity to showcase local talent and for us to recruit new members. It is very relaxed but we do need our members to fly the horticultural flag and get a few more horticultural exhibits to sit beside the wealth of talent in the domestic section.  So please enter something and help us show everyone what fun exhibiting can be. Entry forms and the categories will be published on their website and in local shops soon so get those entries in!

Another gardening year seems to have flown by and I have just sent off my seed order for 2014.  For many years I have used Suttons Seeds which have had very good results over the years. At the moment our garden is very waterlogged and some areas are under water so I am hoping that the weather this year will be kinder than last year.  Although 2013 was a difficult year for gardeners, especially the early months, it was quite successful in the end.

The weekend we opened our garden for the National Gardens Scheme we had over 500 visitors and our stalwart team from the Society who did the teas on the Saturday raised £200.  Many of the visitors said they thought it was one of the best years for the garden.   We also won the cup from the London Gardens Society for the best large garden in London.

Our three shows were successful with very good numbers of entries at each show and as I have said before this is due, not only to the enthusiastic members entering exhibits, but to our excellent committee and helpers – thank you all.

Our Annual General Meeting is on 19 March, please try to come along to discuss any ideas etc. that you may have.  It is a pleasant evening with refreshments and a quiz.  Also we are looking for new committee members so please consider putting your name forward – we only have four meetings a year and help at the shows which is so important.

Another point is that although our membership is fairly healthy we would welcome new faces, so spread the news to family, friends and neighbours.

I hope you have planted your bulbs ready for the Spring show on 29 March.  Please do your best to enter and definitely come along to the shows and bring your friends.

This is the formal notification of the AGM of the Society which is at 7.30 pm on 19 March at the Highgate Society, 10a South Grove, N6 6BS.  In order to cut down on expenses (and save trees!) we have decided not to send out a separate notice of meeting and agenda this year, they will be available on the night together with the 2013 minutes and the audited accounts.  If you would like copies in advance please contact the Secretary.

The show dates for 2014 are 29 March, 19 July and 20 September. The Fair in the Square is 14 June.  Once again thanks to Alan & Anne Dallman we are holding our Annual Garden Party on 22 June in their beautiful garden at 27 Wood Vale, N10 3DJ.  The cost is £5.00 to include drinks and nibbles.  We are not sending out separate invitations this year so if you would like to come please let the Secretary know by 14 June.

The Plant Heritage plant fairs are on 3 May and  6 September 10am to 3.30pm at St Michael’s Primary School, North Road, N6 4BG more details phone 020 8521 2842 or on their website .
