Newsletter 34 - November 2017

STILL TIME!

Because we wanted to get a clearer picture of the way forward for the Society following our Special General Meeting on 28 October, 2017 we apologise for the delay in sending out the Spring Show schedule and Autumn Newsletter.  For those of you who were able to attend I am sure you will agree that the tone of the meeting showed there was a strong and enthusiastic will to ensure the longevity of the Society.  We have had offers of help and four new committee members which is wonderful.  I personally feel very positive and we have agreed that we should continue with three shows a year for the present.  I will leave it to the chairman to explain more in his “Chat” overleaf.

There is still time to sit down and have a look through the catalogues for bulbs and seeds for next year.  It will be upon us before we know it! We are always looking for ways to raise funds, so if you can sow a few extra seeds we can sell the plants at our shows. And if you are in jam and chutney making mode don’t forget our wonderful produce stall!

CHAIRMAN'S CHAT

What a lovely Autumn. I am still mowing the grass using a rotary mower which is very useful for clearing up the leaves at the same time.  At the beginning of October I planted my first lot of daffodils in pots ready for the Spring show. This weekend I will pot up further daffodils to spread the timing, and also the tulips etc.

All three shows this year went very well due to the hard work of the Committee and volunteers and, of course, the members who exhibit, I thank you all.

As you know we were concerned about the society carrying on in its present format; this was the reason we called a special meeting with members to discuss the situation.  I am very pleased to report that the meeting was a great success with new ideas put forward and also new members for the committee.  So a very big thank you to all those who attended.  All the new ideas will be looked into at our next committee meeting in late November. My opinion is if all goes well, the society will survive a good few more years so here’s to the Highgate Horticultural Society.

On a final note, if you get any surplus gifts or bottles at Christmas think of our raffle at the shows, prizes are always welcome plus we know that there are some great cooks out there and our produce stall would be delighted to accept any cakes, chutney or preserves for sale not to say any surplus vegetable or fruit would be welcome.

I wish you all a very enjoyable Christmas and all the best for the New Year.

Alan Dallman

DATES FOR YOUR DIARY

Show dates for 2018 are 14 April, 14 July and 8 September.

Our AGM will be on 17 March at 2.30 p.m.  This is your opportunity to have you say in how the Society is run so do please come along.

HELP

Although we have been encouraged by members offering to help we are still looking for able bodied volunteers to help  set up the show on Friday morning particularly, carrying tables and setting them out in the church and of course the same in reverse on Saturday evening.
