Newsletter 29 - October 2014

This year we introduced novice categories across all shows to encourage new exhibitors and while we had a few dip their toe in the water we still need to spread the word so make sure you tell all your friends and fellow gardeners just what fun it is to exhibit at our shows and get them to join the Society.

We also want your ideas on how we can recruit new members, bring visitors to the shows (if anyone knows George Clooney I am sure that would be a draw if he were to present the awards!) and we are now  at the point where we struggle to set up the shows for lack of able bodied helpers.  The Committee is getting older and we do need people who are willing to work and have fun at the same time.  I’m sure you have all seen Committees where most of the work is done by a very few.  Well with our Committee we are just very few!  So please think hard about how you can help the society continue in its present form or perhaps you think it is time for change?  Just let us know.!

It is now 4.30pm and I have just come in from the garden after a good day's work. I do have a problem which is that I tend to go out to do a specific job but get distracted on the way down the garden, and end up doing something completely different.

I have planted my daffodils in pots ready for the Spring show; the tulips will be potted up at the end of October as they are better planted later.  I am in the process of re-vamping the garden, turning a few areas over to turf to make it easier to maintain and I hope to complete the alterations before the bad weather sets in.

The Summer was not too bad and our shows were all top class with many entries - all of which were of a high standard.  Once again due to the very hard work of the committee and helpers we made a profit on all the shows.

I must mention our new excellent website which was the creation of our secretary, Roxane, who spent many hours putting it together (do have a look).

We are still looking for members to join our friendly committee so please consider it.  Also, we always want cakes and other homemade produce to sell at our shows.

When you receive your 2015 schedule take some time to study the entries and start preparing early for your exhibits.

Meanwhile, lots to do in the garden, a good tidy up, look for snails getting ready to hibernate, composting what you can and look through your seed catalogues on a rainy day.

By the way, has anybody seen any ladybirds this year?

Show dates for 2015 are 28 March, 18 July and 19 September.  Our AGM will be on 18 March.  This is your opportunity to have you say in how the Society is run so do please come along.

As we said we are still looking for able bodied volunteers to help us set up the show on Friday morning particularly, carrying tables and setting them out in the church and of course the same in reverse on Saturday evening.

Please give the Secretary or Chairman a call to have a chat about what is involved.

Also, if you have any ideas for the future schedule please let the Secretary know.
