Newsletter 36 - February 2019

This is the formal notification of the AGM of the Society which will be at 2.30pm on 16 March, 2019 at the Highgate Society, 10a South Grove, N6 6BS. Once again we have chosen a Saturday afternoon which we hope will encourage more members to attend and have their say as well as to meet our new committee members.  As last year, to cut down on expenses (and save trees!), we will not be sending a separate notice of meeting and agenda, they will be available at the meeting together with the 2018 minutes and audited accounts.  If you would like copies in advance please contact the Secretary.

Show dates for 2019 are 13 April, 13 July and 7 September. Fair in the Square is on 15 June.  More diary dates are in your 2019 schedule.  Do take time to look at the categories for the Spring Show – it will be upon us before we know it

A very happy and peaceful 2019 to you all.

We had a very successful year show wise which was due to the hard work of the committee, our loyal helpers and of course the exhibitors. All three shows went very well and were quite well attended; the number of entries could have been better and I would like to remind our artistic flower arrangers that they can use flowers they bought so those members with limited garden space can enter.  Now, I am sure a number of you watch the cookery programmes on the television so why not enter your expert domestic efforts at our shows, we are always looking for new talent.

Now for the most important part of my Chairman's Chat.  Our membership has been sadly falling over the years. It is not only our Society but many others in all fields.  The committee will be discussing this situation at our next meeting so I ask all members to take note of this and try to think of any ideas or comments to try to encourage friends, neighbours, fellow allotment holders to join our society (probably the oldest in England) Please do not read this and do nothing, contact our secretary with any ideas you may have. It does seem that we are always mentioning this situation but it is so important to encourage more members, we just do not want to lose this wonderful Society.

I will end by saying I wish all members a very successful year and hope you will all try to enter something at the shows as more competition is good for all.

        Alan W. Dallman

Come along and help set up or clear away at one of our shows, help with the teas or on one of the other stalls.  We also need more donations for our raffle, produce stall (home baking, preserves, pickles and any “glut” you have later in the season!), plants stall (plant a few extra seeds or pot up split perennials for us to sell) and of course we always need cakes for our teas.

If you can help out give Roxane a call or write with your name and contact details to: The Secretary, 26 Ashmount Road, London N19 3BJ Tel. 020 7263 6831 or you can send an email
