Welcome to the Highgate Horticultural Society website
On 15 December, 1859 a circular was issued convening a meeting for the purpose of establishing a Society, to be called the Highgate Horticultural and Floricultural Society and the first exhibition was held on 27 June, 1860; there were 71 entries and prizes amounting to £23/7/0d were awarded.
Times have changed but we are still a lively group of gardening enthusiasts in the Highgate area, keen to interest others in the joy that gardening brings.
We have three shows a year which we are very lucky to be able to stage in the United Reformed Church in Pond Square (see contact page for address and map) and although horticultural pursuits are our main aim, our shows also include flower arranging and domestic classes and as we are particularly keen to interest younger exhibitors we have a number of classes for children.
Membership is open to all and although most of our members live in the Highgate area we have active members from as far away as Hampshire!
Autumn Show 2021
Dear Members and Friends, EXCITING NEWS.
As the UK government have gone ahead with relaxed restrictions and pandemic conditions.
HHS will be holding the Autumn Show on the 4th September.
If you want like to enter and would like a copy of the show entry categories please email the Seretary on firstname.lastname@example.org all welcome!.
AUTUMN SHOW 2021 I don’t think any of us would have believed it if we had said at our last show in Autumn 2019 that there wouldn’t be another show for two years but of course sadly this was the case but the good news is we are going ahead with our Autumn Show on 4 September. Although the government’s relaxation of mandatory COVID-19 restrictions were removed on 19 July we still feel it prudent to be cautious and we are planning a slimmed down but hopefully wonderful “comeback” show. Some of the changes we feel necessary, mindful of social distancing, are that although the layout will be the same there will be a one-way system for viewing the exhibits. There will not be an awards presentation to avoid numbers congregating in a small space and sadly, for the same reason we are not able to have our famous afternoon teas or auction but our produce stalls will be there in the garden outside the chapel. In addition, we will be encouraging people to wear face masks whilst inside the building and to use the hand sanitiser when entering. It is important to the Society that all exhibitors, members and visitors feel as safe as possible and I know you will all feel the same. We hope that many of you will be able to exhibit (please see the Autumn Show schedule). If you could let the Secretary have your entries either by email to email@example.com or telephone to 020 7263 6831 - by close of play on Thursday, 2 September that would be fantastic. The exhibits can be staged from 9am to 11am on Saturday morning. Finally, can we ask that you spread the word to encourage visitors and exhibitors alike. It’s all very exciting and we can’t wait to see you on 4 September – tiny steps back to normality at last. If you would like to enter, email the Secretary for entry categories. firstname.lastname@example.org
